Our LEGO® Robotics, Coding & Game Design, and Minecraft & Circuitry programs are designed to allow your child to engage, flourish and enjoy their day off. Please note: Regardless of which class they take, or how many times they have taken it, our students do not repeat previous projects - they are always challenged and, when they are ready, they work on a new and interesting assignment.

LEGO® ROBOTICS

In this class, students will learn to build more complex LEGO® robots using a microcomputer called the EV3. Our uniquely designed projects (created and tested in the winter/spring of 2019) take students from robotics and engineering basics with projects like a SumoBot and a RaceCar to advanced construction and programming in which they will design customized sensor and motor attachments for aerial trams, catapults, creatures and more! Students will program robots to move, spin, and pick up objects and even play games with other robots by coding with sensors that allow robots to respond to stimuli such as colors or obstacles. To test their skills, students may participate in team tournaments such as navigating a maze or picking up and dropping objects along an obstacle course. By the end of the program, our students’ pride in their ability to design, build and program their very own robot is sky high!

CODING & GAME DESIGN

Students will design their own video-games using the newest version of Scratch (v2.0), software developed by MIT media lab along with new games and projects developed by Robofun designers in the winter of 2019. They will learn what it means to be a programmer by using logic, developing, and piecing together code to make their own games. Not only will students code on the screen, but they will be working with the BBC Micro: bit (a mini comptroller) that can be controlled by the code they write. This is a game changer in the Scratch world and allows our students to delve deeper into learning about computer programming while designing and building objects with motors, lights and sensor. They will also move from block-based programming to coding with syntax. Scratch was developed by Dr. Mitchel Resnick and associates of the MIT Media Lab. Dr. Resnick is one of Robofun’s Board members and trusted advisors.

MINECRAFT & CIRCUITRY

Students will use the beloved and popular Minecraft platform as a gateway to learning about the properties of electricity. In Minecraft they will design machines that use pistons, levers, buttons, traps, and combination locks. They do this by using the game’s version of circuitry (called “Redstone”) to power buildings with floors, walls, and doors that open and close. Afterward, they move on to hands-on soldering and wiring electrical projects such as an alarm box that goes off when opened to an LED magical wand. Students learn complex principles of circuitry while having fun.
