3rd to 6th Grade After School STEM PROGRAMS

We offer four interactive and hands-on programs for 3rd to 6th graders to explore their creativity, curiosity and to boost their confidence. Please note: Regardless of which class they take, or how many times they have taken it, our students do not repeat previous projects - they are always challenged and, when they are ready, they work on a new and interesting assignment.

In this class, students will learn to build LEGO® robots around a central computer, that is the size of a deck of playing cards, called the EV3. They will learn how to attach motors and sensors to the EV3 and build constructions ranging from race-cars, to catapults and creatures. Students will program their robots to move, spin, and pick up objects.  They will be introduced to ‘sensors’ that will allow their robots to respond to stimuli such as colors or obstacles. To test their skills, students may participate in tournaments and games, such as navigating a maze. By the end of the program, our students’ pride in their ability to design, build and program their very own robot is sky high!

Students will design their own video-games using software developed by MIT media lab called Scratch. They will learn to be programmers by using logic, developing, and piecing together code to make their own games. As they build and move through games such as our “Adventure”, “Maze” and “Platform” games, they will advance their coding skills and increase the complexity of what they’re working on to more and more realistic games. In this class, students often go from being uncertain about what programming is, to being confident about their ability to come up with their own game and design it in a single class. Scratch was developed by Dr. Mitchel Resnick and associates of the MIT Media Lab. Dr. Resnick is one of Robofun’s Board members and trusted advisors.

Students create storyboards, write their scripts, and design characters to make their own stop-motion animation videos. They will explore animating multiple types of media including clay, paper, toys, and found objects. They will learn about the different principles of animation, special effects, and how to add music to score their movies. After completing their first stop-motion animation movie, students will marvel at the fact that they have become filmmakers and directors in their ‘movie’. They take responsibility for all parts of their film – from the script, to the staging, to the soundtrack; there are no limits to how far their imagination can take them and their final cut creation.

Students will use the beloved and popular Minecraft platform as a gateway to learning about the properties of electricity. In Minecraft they will design machines that use pistons, levers, buttons, traps, and combination locks. They do this by using the game’s version of circuitry (called “Redstone”) to power buildings with floors, walls, and doors that open and close. Afterward, they move on to wiring electrical projects such as a LED Minecraft torch to a small DC powered Minecraft cart. Students learn complex principles of circuitry while having fun.
